Untamed Namibia

Untamed Namibia, a land of profound contrasts and dramatic beauty, where the sheer scale of the landscape humbles the soul. This unforgettable journey plunges you into the desolate, shimmering salt pans of Etosha National Park, a wildlife haven where vast herds of elephant, lion, and rhino congregate around sparse waterholes, creating intense, primal viewing experiences. Southward, the ancient, rocky wilderness of Damaraland reveals secrets of geological time, home to the desert-adapted black rhino and elephant, wandering amongst petrified forests and mystical granite kopjes. The adventure culminates at the edge of the Atlantic, where the treacherous, mist-shrouded ships of the Skeleton Coast lie swallowed by dunes, a haunting testament to nature's power, before transitioning inland to the monumental, burnt-orange dunes of Sossusvlei, which rise in silent majesty under an impossibly blue sky, painting a masterpiece of light and shadow at dawn and dusk.

This morning you will be met as we depart Windhoek in your safari vehicle and set off on your Namibia safari, which takes you through Okahandja, via the towns of Otjiwarongo, Otavi and Tsumeb to reach the outskirts of the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park where we will experience exciting game viewing in an area spanning over 22,300 square kilometres. Etosha holds one of the largest, and perhaps the most stable, population of black rhino in the world, as well as giraffe, and rare and unusual species like the black-faced impala, Hartmann’s mountain zebra or the smallest antelope in the world, the Damara dikdik.

We will arrive at the Little Ongava
perched on the crest of a hill commanding magnificent vistas of the plains stretching for miles to the horizon, offering an extraordinary experience as the focal point of an Etosha journey. This intimate camp has only three spacious villas each with its own plunge pool, en-suite bathroom, “sala”, and outdoor shower. The lounge and dining areas have wonderful views of a productive waterhole below the camp, the open deck allowing for relaxed, stylish dining under the African sky.

Either way, you will return to the comforts of the lodge before sunset. As you have the full-time services of your own private guide, in your own 4x4, the day’s activities are scheduled around the specific interests and your energy levels. andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png

After an early breakfast, we depart into the heart of Damaraland, a region typified by displays of colour, magnificent table topped mountains, rock formations and bizarre-looking vegetation. The present-day landscape has been formed by the erosion of wind, water and geological forces which have formed rolling hills, dunes, gravel plains and ancient river terraces. It is the variety and loneliness of the area as well as the scenic splendour which will reward and astound you, giving one an authentic understanding of the word "wilderness".

We will arrive at the Onduli Ridge, located on a private concession in the Doro Nawas Conservancy in the heart of Damaraland, and a mere 20 minutes away from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein. The landscape consists of rugged folded hills, plains and wooded river valleys in a largely semi-desert and sparse savannah,.  Boasting some of the most magnificent views of Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg, and the typical cathedral-like granite inselbergs of Damaraland, Onduli Ridge is within striking distance of other geological attractions such as the Burnt Mountain, Organ Pipes and Doros Crater

DAY 5: Damaraland

DAY 5
andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png

After an early breakfast you will be treated to an exciting 4x4 excursion along the ephemeral Aba Huab River valley to explore this remarkable region and to search for game, especially the elusive desert adapted elephants, if they are in the area. Damaraland is home to a variety of desert adapted wildlife and hidden desert treasures. Depending on their location, you will either enjoy a picnic lunch out in the field or return to camp for lunch and this afternoon you enjoy a scenic bush walk, or e-biking or scenic afternoon nature drive, or alternatively an afternoon at leisure for some well-deserved leisure time. If time allows this afternoon, you will visit the nearby attractions and geological sites of Twyfelfontein rock engravings (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Return to camp with time to freshen up before dinner.

DAY 6: Damaraland / Hoanib River Valley

DAY 6
andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png
andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png

We depart Onduli Ridge today and continue our journey north to Kaokoland, home to the nomadic Himba people, via the small town of Sesfontein before continuing northwest to the camp in the Sesfontein Community Conservancy. Deep in north-western Namibia, the area is a melee of towering mountains, sand dunes, and huge expanses of desert, scattered with unique wildlife and nomadic Himba settlements.

Our retreat will be the Hoanib Valley Camp with six tents sitting in harmony with the rugged environment. The colours, textures and patterns are inspired by the experience of the Hoanib; the rich ochre of the dunes, the geometric patterns of the Himba people and, of course, the giraffe that inspired the project.

DAY 7: Hoanib River Valley

DAY 7
andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png

We will have a full day to uncover the desert-adapted wildlife of the Hoanib River Valley, learning about their survival techniques. Game drives will reveal desert-adapted elephant, as well as stately desert-adapted giraffe, and, if you’re very lucky, desert lion. Zebra, klipspringer and kudu move freely through the mountains, and you’ll find hardy herds of springbok and oryx, as well as steenbok picking their way across the dust-blown landscapes. The region is home to the largest population of free-ranging black rhino, and a day (or even a morning or an afternoon) tracking the magnificent beasts is an absolute must. Bird watchers, keep your eyes peeled for Monteiro’s hornbills or Ruppell’s korhaans in the valleys, and the imperious Verreaux’s eagle in the mountains.

DAY 8: Hoanib River Valley / Skeleton Coast

DAY 8
andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png
andbecause butterfly dark jade png (1).png

Today, we will head to the legendary Skeleton Coast, which stretches 500 kilometers from the Ugab River in the south, to the Kunene River in the north. The attraction of the remote Skeleton Coast lies essentially in the colour, changing moods and untouched profile of its landscape. Its aura of mystery and impenetrability is due to the many shipwrecks, dense coastal fogs and cold sea breeze by the cold Benguela Current. The landscape in the park ranges from sweeping vistas of windswept dunes to rugged canyons with walls of richly coloured volcanic rock and extensive mountains ranges.

We will arrive at the stunning Shipwreck Lodge, located between the Hoarusib and Hoanib Rivers, A place shrouded in mystery and swirling clouds of mist, your accommodation perfectly mirrors the environment, and is created to resemble a shipwreck.
